Shooting Drill - Pass & Shoot Laces

Overview

This is a basic shooting drill that can be used effectively in a junior or senior training session. It is effective as it works the players passing ,lay off and shooting with laces technique on both feet from a variation of positions around the goal.

Set-up

Players have a ball each and are split into three groups positioned centrally and to right and left hand side facing the goal. Three players take up positions with their back to goals opposite each working group to play the role of laying the ball off on their first touch to the player who will shoot at goal. The distance between the working player and player laying the ball off will depend on the age group of the team. We recommend a distance from 5-8 metres with the shorter distance from this range applied to junior teams.

Key Coaching Points:

- Advise the players laying the ball off to be on their toes and ready for the pass from their team mate

- Shooting players are required to make a firm pass with their instep to their team mate in the build up to their shots

- Watch out for the timing of the shooting players run towards the ball. If he or she arrives too early they will have to check their run before they shoot.

- Players should point their toes down, keep their ankles strong and follow through the shot with a jump to perfect the laces shooting technique.

- Players should rotate regularly to practice shooting with both feet from all three positions.

- Encourage players to shoot low and hard across the goalkeeper on shots from wide positions.

- Rotate players who are laying the ball off.
